Healing Denture Aftercare

dentures in joplin

Following the extraction of your teeth, the healing dentures will be placed. Leave your dentures in for approximately 24 hours.

Swelling and discomfort are to be expected. Take medications as prescribed for the first 24 hours. Swelling may be reduced by holding ice packs against the face in the area of extractions for no longer than 15 minutes per hour the first 24 hours.

The healing dentures will act as a bandage and help to limit bleeding. Bleeding normally is minimal.

Your diet for the first 24 hours should be restricted to liquids and soft foods. Suggestions for foods to be purchased before your extractions are: jello, pudding, popsicles, Carnation Instant Breakfast, Meritene, etc. You will find it very difficult to eat with your healing dentures in the beginning. Gradually, you can increase the substance of your diet as healing progresses.

Care after insertion varies for each patient depending on your general health, the number of teeth removed, the difficulty experienced in removing the teeth and the condition of your supporting gums.

Schedule an appointment with us the day your stitches are removed (approximately 1 week following extractions). If your healing dentures are causing excessive irritation, call us immediately.

Adjustments will be made to your dentures according to your particular needs. We advise that you leave your dentures out at night to allow the tissue to rest and stay healthier.

As healing of your tissue (gums) proceeds, you will notice progressive loosening of your dentures. Use of denture adhesives is sometimes helpful. You may need a liner for your healing denture. We will suggest the best timing for placement, if necessary.

We will provide additional instructions about general care for your healing denture. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask us.

I’ve been going to Joplin Family Dental for 6-7 years. The staff are so friendly and helpful. And we love Dr. Kirk. My son is physically challenged and they’ve always really worked to make it the easiest possible. Beth, our hygienist, is super and we love her, too. As a formerly anxious dental patient, I highly recommend Joplin Family Dental.

Always happy to see the folks in the reception desks. They are friendly and always willing to help as needed. They're genuinely interested in the welfare of my family. Lisa is my hygienist. She understands my particular needs and sees to it that they are met. I feel totally relaxed having Lisa delve around in my mouth. My experience with others within the practice are equally positive.

Where to start, I’ve been a patient here for some time and while all the staff from the receptionist to my hygienist, Beth is great. Devon is my favorite. She’s very personal and caring and so knowledgeable I’m what she does. Definitely, in my opinion what keeps me coming back.
