Temporary Crown Aftercare

We have placed a temporary crown on your tooth. Under most circumstances it will function and protect your tooth very well. Ideally, you have an appointment scheduled for the placement of your permanent crown in a few weeks. However, you may be planning to have the temporary crown for a longer period of time.

The best option for the health of your teeth will be to replace the temporary crown with a long-term crown within six months to one year. With a temporary crown, the underlying tooth is more susceptible to cavities. We do understand long-term crowns may be difficult to budget, so we have offered you the option of a temporary crown to allow time for you to plan for the long-term crown.

Care of Your Temporary Crown: Take care of this tooth as you would any other tooth. Brush twice daily, floss once daily and follow any additional oral hygiene procedure we have recommended. You should avoid hard, sticky or crunchy foods. You can eat on this tooth, however, there is a possibility of your temporary crown fracturing or coming off. It would be helpful to do as much of your chewing on the opposite side as possible. If you have temporary crowns on both sides, just be careful when you are eating.

If Your Temporary Crown Comes Off: Contact us as soon as possible for replacement. You can put a small amount of Vaseline in the temporary crown and place it on the tooth until we can re-cement it. If the temporary crown is not replaced within a short period of time, several things may happen that will make it more difficult to replace. It can also adversely affect the long-term outcomes of treatment.

Please call us if you have any questions or concerns about your temporary crown.

I’ve been going to Joplin Family Dental for 6-7 years. The staff are so friendly and helpful. And we love Dr. Kirk. My son is physically challenged and they’ve always really worked to make it the easiest possible. Beth, our hygienist, is super and we love her, too. As a formerly anxious dental patient, I highly recommend Joplin Family Dental.

Always happy to see the folks in the reception desks. They are friendly and always willing to help as needed. They're genuinely interested in the welfare of my family. Lisa is my hygienist. She understands my particular needs and sees to it that they are met. I feel totally relaxed having Lisa delve around in my mouth. My experience with others within the practice are equally positive.

Where to start, I’ve been a patient here for some time and while all the staff from the receptionist to my hygienist, Beth is great. Devon is my favorite. She’s very personal and caring and so knowledgeable I’m what she does. Definitely, in my opinion what keeps me coming back.
